Braking system design, comparing it with Hispano-Suiza's and proposing improvements for equal braking.

stroke of the two rods going away one fore and one aft can be made different, the equal pull can be easily made to give any proportion of braking and clearance. This was explained to Mr. Stent, also that the floating point can be out of centre to allow for the different strokes required for the different proportions of braking leverages and clearances.
COMPARISON WITH HISPANO. I think we ought to make our brakes to have nearly equal clearances and allowances for wear as Hispano, and in addition I hope we shall have automatic proportioning between front and back, and automatic equalising, and we ought to have more constant braking from our more constant and efficient cams. Hispano must have very safely strong pull-off springs when the liners are worn and the latter part of the cam is used where the efficiency is so bad as not to be self releasing unless oily. With our cam we ought to be self releasing without external springs which should only be needed in case of rust.
EQUAL BRAKING. For equal braking (which Mr. Hives points out as being so necessary) I think consistent brakes will be needed and have suggested that we do not trust to the help of a long self lapping shoe forwards which would naturally wear and vary with its help, but that we can use such a design (perhaps jointed or semi-flexible) backwards. I believe it will be quite reliable for the reason given above and I should like to see us be able to hold the car by the foot on a 1 in 5 gradient.
P.N. I was pleased to hear that PN.{Mr Northey} had some 4 wheel brakes but I have not heard where he is on his journey here. I hope to hear he is getting along alright very soon now. After a severe mistral the weather is getting better.
