G/WFH. from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale} N870 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM{Anthony F. Martindale}/7/R.28.6.37. FERODO BRAKE LININGS. In reply to your memo G/WFH/CA.6/JM.{Mr Morley}25.6.37., the linings listed are enough for three cars only, and they were obtained for test purposes. None have been fitted to a customer's car. Mr. J.N. Longley, Ferodo's Chief Chemist, and a Director of that Company, recently suggested that we should not pay for experimental material as it muddled their accounts. He explained that we were the only firm who did pay for samples. The lining was ordered in accordance with this arrangement. We have to do a considerable amount of testing of brake linings, the cost of such testing being many times the cost of the lining. We have to do this extensive testing because Ferodo's cannot supply reliable information concerning their products; and since they cannot give us reliable information, we feel justified in accepting the linings necessary for test.
