In reply to the query in memo. R1/M11426. concerning a lighter clutch and flywheel we would say that a previous memo. R2/M27226. asked for "a lighter and simpler gearbox and clutch and flywheel" and as the former of these two was considered most important it has been concentrated upon especially in view of the fact that we had just standardised a lightened clutch.

The gearbox is now nearing the final stages of design, and the writer has not sent you any drawings yet owing to the continual necessity in order to make a satisfactory and compact job, of changing schemes already thought to be completed. We have one or two difficulties still to overcome in the way of getting the sliders into the casing when assembling and in the design of a good casing itself.

We expect to be able to send you all the drawings of this scheme, with the exception of the suspension and one or two items connected with the Speedometer drive and servo drive, in the course of a week or ten days.

In the meantime we shall be asking Derby to let us know the difference between the inertia of the Silver Ghost flywheel and clutch unit which we understand was satisfactory, compared with the lightened flywheel and clutch recently standardised, in order to see how we stand for further lightening.
