The following is a brief summary of the types of locking devices used on the Oldsmobile.- ENGINE. Main Bearing Caps - Setscrews and Flat Spring Washers. Connecting Rod Caps - Bolts with castellated nuts and split pins. Oil Filter in Sump - Bolts with nuts and flat spring washers. Cylinder Head - Setscrews and Flat Spring Washers. Camshaft Spockets - Locking Plate. Flywheel to Crankshaft - Tab Washers. Engine Mounting (Front) Tab Washers. Other Fittings - Setscrews or Studs with Nuts and Flat Spring Washers. [Signature] TRANSMISSION AND CHASSIS. Universal Joint Flanges :- Tab Washers. Differential Carrier Bearing Caps:- Setscrews & Tab Washers. " " Adjusting Nut:- Tab Washer. Lower Pivot Pin (Front Suspension):- "Shakeproof" Washer. Front Main Spring Plate Retaining Bolts & Nuts:- "Shakeproof" Washer. Horn Mounting bolts to Dashboard :- " " " Brake Hydraulic (Wheel) Cylinders:- Studs with Nuts and "Shakeproof" Washer. Rear Hub Safety Nut on Axle Shaft End:- " " " Front End of Rear Spring:- " " " From the foregoing it will be seen that the Americans place more reliance on Flat Spring Washers than we do, since they use this type inside the engine (Main Bearing Setscrews) and inside the Rear Axle Casing (Crown Wheel Setscrews) RR. use tab washers on the bearing caps and castellated nuts on the crown wheel. "Shakeproof" washers are used in positions in which RR. would definitely use a positive locking device. Tab washers are used where conditions are severe, and it would appear, only when experience has shewn the need for such a device. Ald{F. Allwood - Experimental Design} BY/Ald.{F.
