TYSELEY, BIRMINGHAM TELEPHONE: ACOCKS GREEN 1601-2-3-4 Your ref: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Smith.14/KW March 6th 1935 Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., Experimental Department, DERBY. FOR ATTENTION OF MR. F.{Mr Friese} SMITH Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter of the 5th March and are glad to know that the D.A.42 carburetter has arrived safely. With regard to the fitting of the Automatic Choke Control, this can be done in several ways, but for many reasons the best position is somewhere immediately below the carburetter. It is essential that the thermostat should be against a part of the exhaust pipe which heats up rapidly. You will have noted that in order to allow the thermostat spring to return the choke valve to its fully closed position, it is necessary to "trip" the throttle controls so that the choke valve can close up fully, and so that the throttle stop may return to the fast idle position. We have completed a development of this system wherby this is carried out automatically, whenever the starter motor button is pressed. The writer will be in Derby tomorrow, and would like to show you this system in use, and would welcome the opportunity of discussing the fixing and operation of this control with you. Yours faithfully, BENDIX LIMITED. C.H.L.
