For the attention of Dr. Mackay.

Dear Sirs,

We have now run quite a considerable mileage on tyres made from the new mould. On these tyres each group in the centre portion of the tread consists of four studs instead of five. We have noticed on these tyres that there is a tendency for the leading corner of the studs to become proud of the rest of the tyre and cause noisy running. We have examined several tyres of the old pattern and find that although a similar phenomenon takes place it happens to a much smaller extent.

We should like to have your views on whether our findings are what you would expect to happen, and if so, whether you think it would be advisable to return to the five stud pattern, although the smaller grooves are more likely to pick up stones.

We enclose also in this letter a sketch showing the valve construction which we have developed for the use of single outer wheel discs. In the event of our requiring a certain number of inner tubes to have such a valve we should like to know whether this would present any difficulties to you, or whether you could think of any improvement.

The tubes we have of this kind running about at the works were made by Dunlops with aero valves supplied by Schraders. We would much have preferred an entirely rubber valve and would like to know whether you think this would be possible.

Yours faithfully,
for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD.
