SJ A 2 Phantom II. POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS. Performance. 1. Maximum speed. Continental Model 100 m.p.h. Brooklands Standard " 85 " 2. Acceleration. The greatest practicable acceleration is desired, certainly much more than at present. This is a question of power-weight ratio all the time. Acceleration of other weights are published. (N.B. Quote other makes which are considered to have the required acceberation or speed) ENGINE. Q 1. Mechanical silence. If you consider the engine can be improved for silence, state which unit of the engine is excessively noisy - A Carburetter intake, also exhaust should be quieter. Exhaust bangs should not be possible. Q 2. Other noises (Carburetter intake etc). The Phantoms have always been more noisy than 'Silver Ghosts'. We want to get back to that standard of silence. Q 3. Petrol supply. Do you prefer the P.II vacuum pump (in conjunction with the autovac) or a direct petrol pump. The disadvantages of the petrol pump is that if anything goes wrong with it, the car is stranded; the autovac tank can always be used as a gravity tank to get the car home. A.{Mr Adams} We prefer the autovac in conjunction with a vacuum pump of adequate capacity, and consider a small petrol filler on autovac essential. Q 4. Ignition. Do you agree that twin battery ignition is preferable to magneto and battery; the engine is so big now that it is impossible to turn it, with the starting handle sufficiently fast for the magneto to fire. A.{Mr Adams} We have considered the many pros and cons and would advise the abolition of magneto in favour of duplicate ignition of battery type (one battery). We draw attention to dynamo systems in which the dynamo can feed the ignition in emergency. Tell-tale lamp to be provided. | ||
