ORIGINAL.

SUPER SPORTS ENGINE. X7770 X7100

Engine No. SS{S. Smith}-3. Total running time to date = 2 1/4 hrs.

This engine was run for the first time on Saturday morning - so far only light running has been done.

Running conditions.

Claudel Hobson carburetter (Eagle 1X).
Open exhaust.
Very light loads and low engine r.p.m.

Engine tightened up slightly after 3/4 hrs. running.

Oil pressure (main) = 30 lbs.

Plain bush (E.77346 in dynamo drive seized up after 2 1/4 hrs. running. This bush relies on drip feed for its lubrication. Oil which has been flung off the gears being collected by a baffle (E.77470), from which it should drip into a trough in the spindle (E.77357). Thence it is carried along the space between the spindle and the bolt (E.77354) through a .156 dia. hole in the spindle to the revolving bush (See Lec.2501).

To overcome this failure it is proposed to cut an annular groove kxkxkxkxkxkxkxkxkx (.312 wide X .015 deep) in the bush, also a groove along the bearing parallel to its axis, so as to distribute the oil more evenly. It is also proposed to observe the action of the baffle, and improve it if necessary. The oil pressure to the timing gears appears to be rather low; actual figures will be taken when the engine is again ready for running.

The small vacuum pump on the front end of crankcase becomes rather xxx warm, but shewed no signs of tightening up. Its lubrication seems efficient. (The pump is not connected to an Autovac tank).
