Electric Horns.

I have had a letter from Messrs Lucas this morning on the subject of their new electrically operated wind horn. This is in pursuance of our endeavours to find an electric horn which shall not be so rasping and unpleasant in tone as the Lucas high frequency dual horns which we are now using, and which will be more suitable for use in Town as well as in the Country than our present arrangement.

They now write to say that they have despatched to you a pair of these horns, and we shall be very glad to know what you think of them. I have been using them on my car for about a fortnight, and the nice point about them is that they have a relay circuit enabling you to switch over to the soft note for use in Town. This very soft note is very pleasant to use in London, and even a prolonged blast is not startling to pedestrians. Switching over to the loud note they seem very effective in the country, and much more musical than what we are at present using.

The consumption of current is rather high, but as they are only used intermittently their total consumption must be almost infinitesimal.

They would require suitable brackets to be mounted to the best possible advantage on our cars, but we have in mind standardising horns of this type on all our chassis, both R-R's and Bentley, if you find no serious technical faults and provided the price is not an unreasonable one.

I should be very glad indeed to have a report from you after you have had an opportunity of trying these horns.
