X1166 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}15/KW. 30th July, 1936. C.W. Nichols, Esq., Messrs. S. Smith & Sons (M.A.) Ltd., Cricklewood Works, London, N.W..2. Dear Mr. Nichols, We have received your invoice for £55. 0. 0d. for fitting Jacks to a Phantom III car. As we pointed out previously, we are not satisfied with the attachment of these Jacks, and the Jacks themselves are of no use to us because we cannot put them on our standard fittings. Furthermore, you point out that you cannot conveniently make Jacks to go on our standard fittings. Our interest therefore in the Smith's Jacking system as at present fitted to the Phantom III is almost negligible. We think in view of the fact that we can make no use of the Jacks that your quotation of £55 is a heavier contribution than we ought to make on the experiment. After all, we are always doing experimental work in this factory on which we get no return. We have previously paid you a considerable sum for fitting Jacks experimentally to the 20/25, and we ourselves have expended time, money and energy on testing them and we have not benefitted from this outlay. We should not, however, expect to send you a bill for the work we have done. Briefly, we suggest that we should return the complete Jack equipment to you, and that you should amend your invoice. We do appreciate that at the time you made an effort to do the job expeditiously. Yours sincerely, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
