We verified the journals for hardness after re-nitriding and found them to correspond to 570/585 Vickers/Brinell.

We also verified a portion of the crankshaft previous to our re-nitriding it and found the hardness to be 536.

We consider the above figures to be normal for the composition of the metal as indicated by you, and the re-nitriding will increase the resistance to wear.

Our personal opinion, however, is that the alloy used, as per the formula contained in your letter of the 4th inst. is not very favourable and that very much more satisfactory results might be obtained by modifying it.

This fact, by the way, was brought to the notice of British manufacturers a few years ago, by the Nitralloy Company which deals with all re-nitriding matters in Great Britain.
