contd :- -2- The armoured H.T. wires have also given considerable trouble and in the end they had to be removed and plain H.T. wires fitted. The insulation round the wires broke down and was shorting on to the armouring. In our experimental Electric Dept. a test was made on some of these wires and in one case at 2000 volts the insulation was found to be broken down in three places. in another case the ends of the armouring had become frayed and strands had pierced the insulation thus making a short. During some foggy weather the wires became quite wet and shorting took place near the terminals. Bonding and Chater-Lea Terminals. The bonding wires especially those attached to H.T. wire armouring near the plug in the Vee are very dangerous with regard to shorting on to the plugs not only cutting out the plugs but increasing the fire risk. It may be pointed out that these bonding wires are bare and of 3 or 4" long and great care has to be exercised to see that the above possibilities do not occur. It should be made necessary that these bonding or earthing wires are insulated. We have experienced trouble through this cause. One end of these wires is fixed to the armouring near the terminal, the other end to a convenient stud on the contd :- [Image Text] COPPER WASHERS TO MAKE JOINT BETWEEN INSULATION & PLUG BODY SKETCH OF A 'CHAMPION' PLUG | ||
