Re Proposed Whittle Belt Drive for Dynamo-Motor on Aero Engine.

2.4.15. (2).

J I send herewith two sheets of useful information supplied by the makers of the Whittle belt.

R I should say the information contained is fairly accurate, but the power transmitted, as given, is the limit of the capacity of a belt in good condition. By using the ¾" belt we should have quite a good margin of safety, as this size is stated to be good enough for 6 HP at 3000 feet per min.

With regard to the suggestion of using a chain drive as an alternative, I much prefer the belt if it can be made to give satisfaction, and agree that it would be much kinder to the various parts.

A point which should be borne in mind is that the bearings which take the pull of the belt should be really substantial, particularly the dynamo one, as the belt will have to be rather tight for a short vertical drive on a small pulley such as this to prevent slip. Slipping, if allowed to continue, causes bad heating of the pulleys and belt, which would quickly cause injury to the leather.
