Oil consumption tests conducted on felt glands for Phantom engine valves.

FELT GLANDS ON VALVES. X986 X8060 The following tests were carried out to determine the value of the felt glands used on the Phantom engine valves. The oil consumption tests were carried out on 8-EX - two runs being made, one with the glands fitted and one without them. The conditions otherwise were the same in each case, and were as follows :- Miles run 199 - average speed 40 m.p.h. Engine water temp. 75 - 80°C. Average oil pressure 24.5 lbs/sq.in. Petrol cons: 11 m.p.g. An oil consumption of 2112 m.p.g. was obtained with the felt glands fitted while in the second test with no felt glands the consumption increased to 1280 m.p.g. i.e. an increase of nearly 40%. After both runs the sparking plugs were examined after running light for 15 mins., in both cases they were all dry; with no felt glands fitted smoke was emitted out of the silencer on opening up after idling, but not to a very great extent.
