contd. -3- Hal/LGS8.6.21. *************** trouble with drops of water forming on the glass which causes the needle to rust up and stick. The Marmon car which we have, has an indicator which is practically vertical and is made by the Boston Gauge Company; on there, they have fitted a front supporting bearing for the magnetic needle, a similar scheme to what we use on the R-R Indicator. If, however, the indicator is going to be used in an horizontal position as shown on their drawing A.522., we should not anticipate any trouble from the type fitted to 4.EX Car. We cannot see any reason why full use should not be made of the dial - the range on the dial on 4.EX Car is only 180°. In the case of the Boston Gauge fitted to the Marmon Car, about 300° is used - it is also done on the R-R.{Sir Henry Royce} We think also that the gauge should be marked off in gallons similar to the R.R. and Marmon Gauge. We suggest that Springfield should insist on the Boston Gauge Company supplying them with at least an equally good gauge as the Boston Gauge Co. supply for the Marmon Car. So far the sample on 4.EX Car is nothing like as good. We consider the fitting that Springfield have made for the gauge is heavy and ugly. The bosses formed all round for the screws make it practically impossible to clean and wash. We recommend that another fitting is designed which has less features to collect dirt. Petrol Filter. We notice that Springfield have altered the design of the fitting fixed to the tank which carries the filter. The fitting as originally arranged was designed so that it is contd:- | ||
