2 EFC. FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} C. to BJ. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ORIGINAL R6/M2.12.27. BOSCH MAGNETOS. X 4568 X15790 Regarding the 6 cyl. magneto suitable for our cars, we have looked over this and have come to the conclusion that it is worth a prolonged test to see whether the jump spark distributor on the ordinary type of shuttle wound magneto is satisfactory. One would expect the heavy sparking in the jump spark, with this type of magneto, would burn the little brass contact and generate much nitric acid. I should also be pleased to know if Bosch make a suitable magneto for the 20HP., to avoid the necessity of the costly sleeve type. This is a magneto without a distributor, but with a good range of advance, although I think for the 20HP., the range of advance is not a serious item, providing the engine is easy to start with the starting handle, and the magneto in a retarded position. This feature should not be lost sight of, as the object of putting a magneto on the 20HP. is in case the battery is run down or out of order, or disconnected by even such a simple thing as the blowing of a fuse, when the magneto can quickly be connected to fire the engine, and naturally it would then be necessary to start the engine with the starting handle. This I have found rather difficult on one or two occasions that I have attempted to start a car when the battery was run down standing in the garage for a long period. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
