Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X1588 To ROY{Sir Henry Royce} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Copy to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re Engine Lubricating Oils for RR.Chassis. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}9/E8.3.34 Referring to ROY{Sir Henry Royce}1/WG.{Mr Gill - Financial Director}3.3.34 I note you advised Prices, Wakefields and Shell-Mex that it was our intention to recommend 3 Oils and 3 Oils only for RR chassis for the period ending December 31st 1934. The position is that we have approved and recommended Vacuum Oil for use on Bentley chassis. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} tells me that it is a very good oil. We also know that it is probably the oil with the widest world-distribution. The fact that we have approved and recommended its use for Bentleys means that it is very difficult for us to refuse to do ditto for RR because the Bentley conditions are more arduous than the RR. They would be very pleased and, I think, satisfied for the time being if we could give them approval for its use on RR cars without necessarily at this juncture recommending it in the Instruction Book. The latter could come later. I do not want to do this, however, until you have cleared the air with the other people if there is anything in the arrangement which would give them cause for complaint if this were done.
