Messrs. Thos. Firth & Sons,Ltd.,
NORFOLK WORKS,
SHEFFIELD.

Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. Stansfield.
SPORTS TYPE FIVE LEAVED LIGHT SPRINGS FOR 23-EX.

We have now tested these springs for life and the only fracture we have had is the tip of the second [handwritten correction: fourth] leaf which carries the clip.

We attach the broken piece herewith so that you can examine it.

We think that the trouble is due to the tip of the leaf being insufficiently flexible and the clip being too far back from the tip of the leaf.

You will recollect that Mr. Bailey has for some time been trying to get the tips of the leaves as flexible as possible.

We are re-drawing this five plate front spring with more flexible tips of the leaves and the spring clip altered slightly, and shall ask you to make up another set to the altered proportions.

Yours faithfully,

For Rolls-Royce Ltd.
