X.3891 To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to CJ. c. to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to EFC. --- [horizontal line] X 3882 [text is crossed out] X.3891 RE 40/50 PETROL LEVEL INDICATOR. E4/G17.3.21. Referring to the above, Mr. Royce wishes to know if the very large apertures in the 40/50 H.P. petrol tank baffles may be the cause of the petrol moving about sufficiently to upset the level indicator, and allow the finger to get out of phase with the magnet by half a turn. With both the finger armature and the horse shoe magnetised, the foregoing point does not apply of course, but Mr. Royce thinks that if the agitations of the petrol was the cause of the original trouble with the indicator, then it is better in any case to use only small holes through the petrol tank baffles, as the only duty these holes have to do is to feed petrol as required from one compartment to another.
