40/50. Gearbox

We have always been somewhat in the dark regarding the cause of a groaning noise on the 40/50 chassis when starting from a standstill. This noise is heard on nearly every chassis when it is first moved under power, but in most cases is never heard again.

On some chassis, however, the noise can be reproduced every time the chassis is moved, and we have just dealt with an exceptionally bad case of it on 20-TG, a finished car which has been returned with this complaint.

We have located the cause to be due to the moving of the continuous gears on their shafts, which have a spline and taper fixing.

Perhaps you will consider the question of the present limits on these parts, such as the amount of permissible slack on the splines and the amount of "draw" on the taper portion. It would appear that at present it is possible to have little or no "draw" on the taper portion and .002" slack on the splines.
