To Ry & Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} From RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/SB.{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister} 260! GRY.{Shadwell Grylls} RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/SB.{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister}1/MC.1.12.37. BENTLEY CRANKSHAFT. In reply to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}8/AP.16.11.37, we find that the Packard type crankshaft to LeC.5139 may be machined from existing forgings but the total saving as compared with the present standard shaft would be only 1/8d per chassis. This is due to the fact that the more complicated machining of the shaft practically absorbs the saving due to the reduction in number of balance weights. If new Dies costing about £550.0.0d. were produced to give a web profile nearer to finished shape, this saving would be increased to 4/2d, but in any case it would be necessary to spend £175.0.0d on machining fixtures, before this crankshaft could be standardised.
