Marles Steering - Phantom 3.

This confirms that I have left with you N.Sch. 4711 showing certain modifications to the above steering box which we believe meet the criticisms arising from test results uptodate.

The rocking shaft has been put up in diameter to 1.3" for as much of its length as possible, and to do this we have substituted a plain bearing for the needle bearing adjacent to the pendulum lever.

Keeping the shaft to 1.3" diameter has enabled us to use the standard form of cage for the inner roller bearing.

The increased stiffness obtained by this modification is as shown on the attached table Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/AEC.1/HP.13.12.35.

The bearings for the cam are intended to be preloaded, and a Belleville washer to maintain the loading when the casings expand with rising temperature is shown in the end cover.

We have had to somewhat guess at the proportions of this spring washer, and we should, therefore, like some samples to be obtained at once for test, to see if the required load is obtained. A small modification has been made to the inner sleeve of the central lubrication oil feed to the rocker shaft by arranging for a force fit on the inner end and a clearance fit on the gland end, to avoid an internal leakage which was found to occur with the force fit specified on both ends.

We should be glad if RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} would make up as soon as possible a box embodying these modifications for test, and in the meantime perhaps some arrangement could be made to embody these improvements on production as soon as they are ratified.
