C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} CAR DESIGN WORK.

We are working on many problems as well as finishing some urgently wanted designs which you also require for "Peregrine".

PETROL GAUGE. I have long thought the petrol gauge, with so many pipes, quite too much of it. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 3. is being arranged with one pipe only.

EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} is busy with the back end of J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 3. chassis.

IGNITION COIL. The samples of the 4 different makes seem so much alike as to suggest an exact copy, and there seems little reason for our making one in small numbers unless we are going to make more cars per week, but this will have to be the case anyway.
"Peregrine" must be at a price that we can sell 20 per week at least so we ought to estimate that we shall want 5 or 6 coils per day, which might keep a few hard working on this very simple work, from a design point of view. Naturally there are production requirements such as right materials, and craftsmanship.

EXHAUST PIPES. 'China' is a bad engine on which to arrange a simple pipe, and we have had to send you something that is too much for a permanent design, and will be cured on J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 3. This we have designed with definite slides at each end so that there is no such thing as sufficient clearance in the studs. As shewn it is:
(1) Not likely to be too tightly clamped.
(2) No limit to the clearance.
(3) Nuts should not come loose.
(4) Inexpensive joint rings.
(5) Well controlled without steady pin in pipe to limit slide.

Experience we think will justify the extra work necessary that we have to make it thus more foolproof.
