Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swd1.8/AP. November 2nd.1937. The Hoyt Metal Co., Putney, LONDON S.W.15. Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter of the 20th. ult. and the information regarding the suitability of your Eleven H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} material as an outside bearing. We have in mind our Ph.III. big end bearing i.e. the outside bearing surface. It is possible for us to use our own developed A/T. material in the form of loose bushes on the inside, but not on the outside, therefore, we require the best metal we can get for outside adhesion and strength. As it is rather difficult to get hold of the production metalling jigs, we wonder if it is possible for you to metal the outside surface of some Ph.III. connecting rod bearing shells in Eleven H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} material in a way satisfactory to yourself without the jig? You will no doubt have heard through your Mr.Shelton that of the nine bearings you metalled for us in 'Satco', six were scrapped during the process of machining due to lumps of metal falling away through bad adhesion. With this in view, we should like to know if you would consider metalling some similar shells for us on the outside face only in your 'Eleven H' material, in lieu of the 'Satco' bearings which proved faulty before trial. We should be pleased to hear from you in respect of the aforegoing as soon as possible. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
