TO EY. FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Copy to - GJ. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} [Strikethrough] SECRET E2/M2.2.34. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. 1V. X9100 [Strikethrough] X9120 MAGNETO AND DYNAMO COUPLINGS. We send herewith drawing No. Lec.1821., shewing the above. A blue print of this drawing has been sent to Mr. Royce and we shall be shortly expecting his comments. The couplings shewn on the drive are 2.6" dia. that is .1" larger than originally schemed for the Goshawks to drive the full size Watford machine. They are small enough to allow the existing dynamo cover to pass over, but we are suggesting to Mr. Royce that they might with advantage be increased to 2.75" or even 3" dia. to ensure long life, particularly in view of the fact that the coupling between the dynamo and the engine may have to carry momentarily a heavy torque when the engine is accelerated freely under no load, a practice which is often done in testing. We have not dealt with alternative sizes [Strikethrough] of couplings on this scheme as we wish to start work on herewith [Handwritten] the EAC.4. gearbox, but this matter is not an extremely urgent one. We should like Mr. Hives' opinion on our proposals regarding the sizes of these couplings as we think he may have had some useful experience on the first designs put out for Goshawk 11.
