To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson} c. to BJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to RG.{Mr Rowledge} L. c. to DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} EY. FRICTION IN THE STEERING COLUMN. (Handwritten: X5430) (Handwritten: 18430) We have now done considerable mileage with both a 40/50 HP. and 20 HP. car fitted with friction divided between the column and the cross steering tube. The steering in each car is arranged as far as possible to be as light as the present average standard car. Apart from the division of the friction, the 20 HP. steering is absolutely standard. The 40/50 HP. has 2½º backwards pivot lean i.e. 1º more than standard. Both cars self-centre satisfactorily. We have encountered no trouble with high or low speed wobbles. The most noticeable result is reduced road reaction and slightly increased selectiveness. The benefit conferred upon the 20 HP. is more marked than that on the 40/50 HP.
