32-EX. PHANTOM III.
Lucas W.T. 13 Horns.

Replying to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}1/AP.31.7.37, we have compared the other horn on 32-EX. with those on 26.G.VI. It also has cheese headed screws fixing it to the bracket similar to those that fractured, whereas the 25/30 horns are secured by round headed screws which you say are standard. Also the round headed screws on 26.G.VI. are heads downwards, and the cheese headed screws on 32-EX. heads upwards.

The explanation of the odd screws will be that the horns on 32-EX. were supplied in a rush by Lucas at the last moment as we turned down the ones previously fitted as they were so feeble. These are feeble too.

The wind tone horns on 26.G.VI. are very good and are the older type. We found a similar pair on 37-EX. at Derby and had Messrs. Lucas' horn Expert over to tell us why we could not have them all like that, and there would be no complaints about inadequate warning. He was unable to guarantee this and seemed to regard it as a lucky fluke.

We feel that if it can be done twice, it should be possible to maintain that standard.
