Dec. 31st. 1918. By 7/P311218. Messrs. Herbert Frood, Ltd. Sovereign Mills, Chapel-En-Le-Frith. Dear Sirs, X.3357. FOR THE ATTENTION OF MR.HERBERT FROOD. Referring to your recent visit to our Works, we would like to try some of your new material, viz., your hard pressed wire woven asbestos in a friction anchorage gear. We have previously tried your standard Ferodo, but under the pressures we have to work at in oil, this type of material spreads out, but judging from your remarks, when at our works, I would imagine that the wire woven asbestos hard pressed specially treated, would stand up to the work quite well. What we actually require is 24 plates 7.200" dia. inside, 9.200" dia. outside and .125" thick. Would it be possible for you on such a small order to produce the necessary tackle to make the discs in question? We look upon this matter as very important as it represents an attempt to overcome some very serious effects which arise from using of aero engines in Seaplanes, due to the water washing into the propellers and setting up very high stresses in the material - The Ferodo plates are used in a friction anchorage device, designed to relieve the load imposed by the action referred to. The type of material I require is that used by yourselves for the dry plate clutches on the "Tanks" Yours faithfully, | ||
