re Phantom III Body Mounting.

We consider it is most urgent and important that we should have a comprehensive report on the practicability and effect of the rubber body mounting on Phantom III, apart from the question of rubber shackles to the road springs.

It is very necessary to clear up the coachwork position as soon as possible and our own production departments are awaiting some instructions concerning the parts affected.

The scheme we wish to adopt for immediate purposes is rubber mounting the body as carried out on 34-EX and 35-EX with semi-isolation rubber connection between body and dash. We would also like to have the transverse ties connected up for locating the back of the body sideways relative to the chassis, but whether these will bring back tyre noise to any extent we do not know. We can arrange the anchorage of these ties to be of the silent bloc pattern if they are found harmful.

The other chassis that has been altered to a rubber mounted body is 33-EX, but in this case the work was done at Derby and the modification did not include introducing semi-isolation at the dashboard. The body, therefore, remains bolted solidly to the dash, a condition which we do not like very much as it may result in structural failure.

Our experience is that transverse relative movement between the scuttle and the dash can be cured by using the adjustable rubber pads which were fitted up on the first Phantom III which started life with scuttle isolation.
