ORIGINAL
CHASSIS WORK
PRESENT, & IMMEDIATE FUTURE.

6 CYL. P. 2. AND J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 1.

The above chassis should have:

(1) Diamond mounting with damping far forward, and perhaps at rear of gearbox, with soft inlaid rubber feet, preferably forward.

(2) For P.2. double top, magnetic clutch and brake (touch switch only) and helical epicyclic.

For J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 1. synchro-mesh, with about 2.5" extra length of gearbox, (but suggest this on 3rd. gear only, because 4th. permits no difficulty, and is not an emergency gear?)

(3) With the more silent and convenient 3rd. we want a higher back axle ratio. P. 2. should have 13 teeth for standard, and 14 teeth for the speed model, which gives:
13 teeth....4th. gear 31 MPH., 3rd. gear 23.1 MPH.) per 1000
14 teeth....4th. gear. 33.2 ", 3rd. gear 24.6 " ) present 26.3.

J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 1. should have:
12 teeth....4th. gear. 23.5 " ) per
13 teeth....4th. gear. 25.5 " ) 1000.

P. 2. engine should give good HP. @ 3000 RPM., and J.1. @ 3250 RPM.

We ought (well before the Show) to get certified speeds of;

P. 2. @ 95 MPH.) Higher if possible,
J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 1. @ 75 MPH.)

with a small closed body, low, and narrow streamline wings.

This at present only seems possible if the B.A. ratio is increased as suggested. It must be higher than Bentley for this particular job. We have always been too low geared for maximum speeds.

It is not necessary to beat Bentley but at present people think our maximum about 50 MPH., and if we could shew we were only 5 or 10% slower the average buyer would not mind if we had other valuable qualities.

EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}, and others say definitely that the Bentley, though a good car is definitely not a RR.

We certainly ought to have 13 and 14 tooth gear for P. 2., and 12 and 13 tooth gear for J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 1., unless we get the peak at definitely higher.uus
