666a To Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/IMW.{Ivan M. Waller - Head of Chateauroux} Chateauroux. c. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/JBD.{John B. Dixon - Fuel Systems} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}3/MH.{M. Huckerby}16.8.39. BRAKES 39.G.VII. In reply to your telegram. Eight new shoes with BZ-RU linings have already been despatched. We know you have a personal preference for VG.90 and that you will probably try to prove that BZ-RU is no use by deliberately crazing the drums. As it is possible to drive a car with virtually no brakes at all we hold you responsible for having the car driven so that the drums do not "rumble". We will put this point of view most strongly to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} on his return, we know that he is already against having all our cars fitted with "Waller Brakes". There are certain problems connected with the brake distribution but at present 3 out of 4 cars are being devoted to destruction tests in France and elsewhere, and 1 to elimination of faults. We have some six schemes to try, stabilizing servo equalizer, stabilizing linings, more front braking, no residual pressure in hydraulic lines, "direct to all four" linkage, etc. In the meantime we do not want to run the car with unstable linings.
