Dear Sir,

We are experimenting with a sample consignment of Firth's N.M.C. steel, supplied in bars of 1-3/8" diameter, and are experiencing considerable trouble with the machining of this steel.

So far we have found it necessary to carry out an annealing treatment before commencing machining, and even after this treatment the machining time for a given size of bolt made from this steel is almost double that of the time required to machine a bolt from steel supplied to our usual standards.

If you have any experience of this type of steel, could you please advise us with regard to the necessary heat treatment before machining, and also let us have recommendations for the most suitable type of tool steel, cutting speed, and rate of feed.

Thanking you in anticipation,

We are,
Yours faithfully,
p.p. LEYLAND MOTORS LIMITED,

M Pilkington

Chief Engineer.
