x4481. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} Hll/EA20.12.29. Laboratory. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} BVs Re Axle Oils.- Hypoid Axle. Whitmore's Compound has been imitated by Messrs. Wakefield and Messrs. Price. The former has been reported on previously. The latter has only been received recently, and has been tested prior to and after ageing, giving good results in each case (i.e. similar to the original Whitmore's Compound). It appears that Price's imitation is somewhat thinner and more uniform in consistency than Whitmore's, though this difference might not be maintained when supplied in barrels. With respect to the axle that failed with Whitmore's Compound, piling-up of the lubricant away from the teeth may have been a contributory cause of the failure, and the oil level in the axle casing may have become low owing to this reason. More oil in the box or a slightly thinner oil might overcome this trouble (Messrs. Whitmore's might suggest a method of thinning). Neither grit nor water were present in the sample of lubricant taken from the failed axle in sufficient quantities to have caused the wear. Mr. Evans of Messrs. Wakefield's is coming over after Xmas and is bringing some oil to test on the Laboratory rig. It is possible that the gears themselves may be contributory so that we are testing some that are worn, to see if the case on the teeth is of correct hardness and of satisfactory structure and that the material is otherwise up to our requirements.
