Dear Mr Grylls, Thank you for your letter of the 7th October. I shall be interested to see a micrograph of the Austenitic iron when you have one available, and if I can comment on it usefully, in particular as regards its reaction on various brake linings, I will do so. I am glad to note that you propose to come to see us one day next week. I shall be glad if you will avoid Wednesday and Thursday as on those days I shall be in London. The remaining days are entirely at your disposal, as also is our test machine. With regard to composite drums, there is some interesting work which we can discuss, but the drums themselves have been returned to the owners and therefore we cannot show you any actual testing. Should you care to bring or send experimental drums, however, we can quickly demonstrate their properties. With regard to the new zinc wire Ferodo Bonded Asbestos, I really believe it has all the virtues that are desirable. It is later than B.Z. but in fundamental behaviour it is almost identical with Ferodo Bonded Asbestos. Its outstanding characteristics are those of F.B.A., plus an enormously improved durability, and the coefficient of friction is not too badly affected by damp or wet conditions. Its reference number at this stage is "Ferodo Bonded Asbestos S.5805," and I can only repeat that if you can adopt it as standard, the last remaining argument against a complete change-over to this quality will have been removed. We shall look forward to hearing which day we may expect you next week. Yours sincerely, JLongley | ||
