We are issuing a standardisation sheet for Dummy Shutters and thermostat scheme to LeC.3488 on M series Bentley.

We have called for modification RM.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}369 to scheme LeC.3488 in order to facilitate setting of the thermostat, reduce cost of the bellows unit and avoid any possibility of sticking in the guide ( the large lower inner guide shown on the original scheme was reduced in diameter on the 15,000 miles 3.B.IV unit so that it was completely ineffective and all the guidance was done by the small diameter top guide)

With this modification, two alternative procedures are possible -

(1) The thermostat bellows unit alone can be purchased from the British Thermostat Co. Ltd., and the spindle, shut off valve, locking nut, and taper pin can be fitted to it here, the necessary adjustment being made so that main valve opens at the correct temperature i.e. 78°C.

(2) The thermostat bellows unit built up complete with spindle, shut off valve, locking nut and taper pin (these pieces being supplied by us to the thermostat makers) can be purchased from the British Thermostat Co. Ltd. - the unit having been correctly set in a master casing at their works, it would be ready to drop into our casing here without any fitting or adjustment.

Will you please let us know which arrangement you would adopt, so that the necessary instructions and drawings etc. can be issued.
