RE CROSS STEERING TUBES. X.3128

With reference to the above, we are sending you one or two further improvements, experimental parts of which we want you to make without delay, and see whether it is preferable to fit existing cars either with the arrangement already proposed, or with any of these other modifications. It is also imperative to get them thoroughly tested with a view to adopting the best on the cars to be made immediately after the war. In this case I should propose scrapping any existing parts already made or partly made for this particular fitting.

(1) There is a two-bolt connecting rod and job to fit any form of sphere.

(2) There is a tubular end to fit special detachable spheres or steering arms with a forked end.

(3) There is also a steering arm with a forked end with two types of spherical fitting, one in a single piece suitable for certain types of cross tube fittings, and one in three pieces suitable for tubes with solid ends.

We trust that none of these fittings will be allowed to rest until a small number have been made and tested with such severity as will break up the existing arrangement at the weakest place.

In criticising these fittings, it should be considered chiefly how far garage fitters can get wrong, and what would be the consequences of any bad fitting that could be introduced.

R.{Sir Henry Royce}
