Chassis Frames

With reference to memo. Wym.{G. Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager}4/OH.20.12.43, we agree with all these frame and front pan gauges, with the exception of 1R1, which according to our records, the side members are .104, as it is a standard B.5. frame that was fitted. Below is a chart showing the frame numbers and information that will be useful:-

CHASSIS | FRAME NO. | WHEELBASE | DASH TO FRONT WHEELS | DASH TO REAR WHEELS | FRAME GAUGE | FRONT PAN NUMBERS | FRONT PAN TYPE | FRONT PAN GAUGE. | ENGINE MOUNTING
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---
B.5. | FB.4518/9 | 10'4" | 34.500 | 89.500 | .104 12SWG | FB.4174 | Straight | .104 | High
B.50. | FB.4520/1 | 10'10" | 34.500 | 95.500 | .104 12SWG | FB.4174 | Straight | .104 | High
B.80. | FW.1752/3 | 11'1" | 34.500 | 98.500 | .104 12SWG | FW.1827 | Bent | .104 12SWG | Low
1RT1 | FB.5087/8 | 9'8½" | 27.000 | 89.500 | .080 14SWG | FW.5091 | Bent | .072 12SWG | High
Silver Ripple | RF.201/2. | 9'2" | 20.500 | 89.500 | .064 16SWG | FW.1827 | Bent | .104 | High

It will be noticed that bent front pans are fitted to B.80, 1RT1, and will be fitted to Silver Ripple. There is no reason why bent front pans cannot be fitted to B.5 and B.50. Cars, although to fit them to frames already built up is very difficult, as the gussets at the front end are welded to the main side channels. We had once actually added the bent front pan to a frame, but this frame had never been welded up, and all we had to do was to take out the rivets as far as the cross centre to get/the old pan, and put in a bent pan. Some design work is necessary to ensure that the radiator mountings are made to suit the bent front pans.
