Contd. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} -2- SPT2/BH4635. Op.4. Undo nuts holding float chamber cover and remove covers. Op.5 Remove top mixture control pin on front carburetter. Op.6 Slacken off nut holding float chamber to carburetter, on rear carburetter. Op.7 Remove drain pipe from rear carburetter, i.e. nuts on cylinder and screws on crank chamber. Op.8 Elongate the hole in undershield .125" to allow for double pipes if necessary. Op.9 Fit new carburetter float covers. Op.10. Thread new pipe in from front end, afterwards tighten up rear float chamber. Op.11. Place banjos in position on float chamber and fasten up. Op.12 Fit unions in float chambers. Op.13 Re-fit petrol pipes and bracket. Op.14 Fasten drain pipes to cylinder and crankcase. Op.15. Replace control pin on front carburetter. Further in connection with this fire trouble, it was agreed also to take off the lockingwires fitted to the sparking plug and replace these by knurled terminal nuts which you will remember, have been a feature of R.R. quality ever since we made cars. Aerolite pistons. It has been found necessary to re-heat-treat all these pistons. This has necessitated stripping down engines, re-hone the cylinder bores to give extra clearance, other than standard, in accordance with By's instructions. This affects interchangeability of Bentley pistons, and may cause some little confusion, when the necessity arises for replacement. The quality of the Aerolite piston, taken as a whole, is not up to the standard of RR. products, in so much that the gudgeon pins themselves vary quite .00025", which of course affects the con rod bush clearance, and incurs greater detail work of our Assembly Dept., to ensure we get the correct clearance between the bush and the pin, and each gudgeon pin because of variations in size must be kept to its own piston. contd: | ||
