-3- Ovl/Wl3.192 parts would be ordered separately. 5. Bumpers. Standard bumpers at correct height with +- 1" tolerance (18" front 19" rear unloaded) are an absolute necessity for American Traffic conditions. Am writing America for full particulars of the present bumpers and attachments. The standardisation of the attachments is important for quick replacement. For neat finish of the frame, it is now universal practice to make the bumper socket part of the front and rear horn forgings, and so therefore think this should be done on L.H. P.II. From an inspection of Phantom II frame, one would guess that the sweep of the frame at front and rear renders it insufficiently strong to carry the normal blows that are encountered. To prove this, am writing America for copy of the Under-writers' tests on bumpers, which could be carried out here and which will serve, with sample bumpers from America, to prove whether the frame is as strong as its protection. We believe that turning down the lower flange of the frame about 2" on its inner edge (which we find the frame makers are glad to do) is effective in strengthening the ends. This would also stiffen the front horns, which on P.I, we found to improve the steering. We should fit the bumper bars in the States on receipt of chassis. 6. Lamps. Headlamps with bifilament dimming. Sidelamps on mudguards. Three-piece rear lamp having tail, stop and backing lights, are now standard in U.S. A.A.A.I. should fit these as they have to be accepted American types. America would also provide brackets etc., for these lamps. Propose that you should omit the present P.II headlamp posts entirely, but provide the brackets on the frame. English standard number plate bracket and means of attaching tail lamp will not be required. Three cables should be brought to the left rear end of the frame, carrying normal tail light current, current from stop light switch, current from backing light switch. The latter two switches could be provided by England or America as desired. Stop-light Switch. This is operated by the brake pedal. The stop-light is 21 c.p. so contacts, cables etc., need to be of fair size. Backing Light Switch. Lamp is 21 c.p. This is operated by the action of engaging Contd:-- | ||
