[The following text is crossed out with a diagonal line] X.4247. โ Three speed gear box carried on rear of engine. (Gear box will be similar to Goshawk, but modified for three speeds). X.4252. Central change gear and brake levers. X.4256/7. The back axle to be generally of the "Goshawk" type but lighter and simpler. It will have - X.4255. (a) Central gearbox of cast aluminium split longi-tudinal, as on "Goshawk". (b) Taper steel axle tubes of rather small diameter. (c) The rod underneath. (d) Double rear brakes. (e) Fabric disc couplings at each end of propeller shaft drive from change speed gear box. (f) Parallel control by semi-elliptic rear springs the springs to be very long for the purpose of obtaining stiff spring leaves which will carry the brake torque and propulsive torque of the axle.
