You will see that in favouring the adoption of the two piece block and J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Z. cylinder, we are removing the cause of distortion, which should considerably improve the condition under which the pistons are working, and if we could supply the hardened liners and the type of piston which we could prove to be less dependent on careful fitting and lubrication, we should be doing something that would increase the reliability of the engine, or make it less exacting in the care needed for successful operation.

P. V.{VIENNA} BLOWER DRIVE.

I doubt if we have the best arrangement of the P. V.{VIENNA} reduction gear. I am not sure whether RG.{Mr Rowledge} wishes me to produce here a design for the epicyclic reduction gear which I believe it is agreed that the accelerated double train of about .5 ratio will prove the best type, owing to the gears being so beautifully balanced, and the rate of engagement slower than any other type. The tooth loads also should prove considerably less intense.

Regarding the Westland shaft driven propeller I am of the decided opinion that this will not prove a success, and I hope you have made it clear to Major Bulman that this is our opinion, which should prevent us running into any additional responsibility in the matter.

In conclusion, I think Mr. Hubbra's report on his observations at the Paris Show, and about Paris, are excellent, and very useful information which we could try out experimentally, such as the thinner bearing liners, which would help the weight if equally good.
