To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to CJ. BJ. c. to RG.{Mr Rowledge} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to De. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} BUMPING TESTS ON FIRTHS SPRINGS. Attached herewith is a report giving the life and fractures of Firths front springs tested on the bump test. The springs are the 12 1/4% thin leaf type. In the case of these springs, Messrs. Firths were given a free hand with regard to the camber and thicknesses of plates and brinell. It will be seen that these springs are a very definite improvement over any other front springs we have tested before. The average life of the top plates of the 12 1/4% Woodhead springs - was 25 hrs. In the case of the latest Firths springs :- No.019 top plate fractured after 31 hrs. approx. No.020 top plate fractured after 45 1/2 hrs. approx. No.022 ran 43 hrs. - the top plate is still not fractured. No.023 fractured after 33 hrs. approx. As we have broken the frame on the bump test chassis we have stopped these tests and are carrying on with EAC.11. chassis. Some of these springs are running in France. So far they have completed 2,000 miles. We anticipate the 10,000 miles will be completed in a fortnights time. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
