We have examined the down pipe and primary expansion chamber which broke just prior to Waller's departure.

The fracture actually occurred on the outside of the welding at the point where the down pipe enters the first expansion chamber. It appears that this particular point is under continual stress, due to the length of pipe and silencer it has to support, there being no suspension between this and the rear of the main silencer.

The metal shows layers of scale on the inside and has considerably reduced the thickness and strength of the material, allowing it to give way at that point as soon as the pipes become red hot. The aluminising has remained intact and the outside surfaces are clean and free from rust and scale.

There is no doubt that an additional suspension on the centre cross tube would considerably assist the durability of the welded joint in question.
