Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/Lw. OUR REF. SR/EB 187.R. Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd. DERBY. 30th October, 1929. Dear Sirs, Attention of Mr. W.A. Robotham. Confirming the visit of our Experimental Engineer Mr. Ardern on the 22nd. inst., we have pleasure in submitting the results of further tests, showing an increase in delivery of fuel by the Patent AUTOVAC Apparatus. The conditions under which the tests were taken were exactly the same as those used in our reports of the 15th. The increased delivery in the first test was attained by altering the size of the Air Valve seating from .116 to .125. This shortened the emptying period of the AUTOVAC. The second test includes the improvements shown in the first test, along with an improvement we attained by using a fresh type of Drop Valve AV.357, illustrated on the enclosed print. On this Valve the length of Lever (marked A.{Mr Adams} on print) remains practically constant, reducing the friction of movement which allows the disc B. to open very much wider, thus reducing the emptying time. We have enclosed a blue print of Drop Valve AV.226 which is fitted as standard to your Apparatus. The weight of petrol cannot open this Valve as wide as Valve AV.357 because of the large radius of the screw heads on which the lever works. The length of Lever marked A on print increases as the Valve opens. [Handwritten] Drg. made to suit. FRH. | ||
