-2- We have consequently been in touch with Aubert & Duval and they informed us that they could undertake the work providing that we would let them have the exact composition of the steel of the crankshaft which we require "nitriding"; this they state is indispensable. You will observe from the above that in the event of your agreeing to let Messrs. Aubert & Duval have the information required, we can then arrange to have the crankshaft re-ground and re-nitrated in Paris. We should also like to have information concerning the following providing of course that you agree to the crankshaft being reconditioned in Paris: - 1). Would it be necessary to de-nitrurate the crankshaft before re-grinding same ? 2). Would it be necessary after the re-grinding of the crankshaft and the nitruration of same, to have the main journals and crank pins lightly re-ground ? Concerning the crankshaft of this car, we find from the measurements which we have taken, that it will be most probably necessary to have the main journals re-ground to .015" undersize, we should therefore, need a set of .030" undersize main white metal bearings in order to make a good job. In the event of you not agreeing to let Messrs. Aubert & Duval have the information in question, then there are only two possible alternatives, vis :- A.{Mr Adams} That you send us a new crankshaft plus a set of whitemetal main bearings similar to those sent in the past (suitable for Martell reamering). The original crankshaft could then be returned to you for reconditioning. B. Return the crankshaft to you for reconditioning and when re-conditioned it should be returned to us complete with a set of suitable whitemetal main bearings. This latter way would be the longest as far as time is concerned. We have been informed that Messrs. Aubert & Duval are very well know for the quality of their steels, especially steels suitable for nitruration. We shall be pleased to have your views upon the above as soon as possible. Should it be decided by you that we can have the crankshaft of the above chassis and crankshafts of other Bentley chassis, that may need attention in the future re-conditioned in Paris, then please let us have all the information considered necessary.
