40/50 HP. CHASSIS MATERIAL.
--------------------

We have had instructions from Sales to order up a further 100 sets of 40/50 HP. chassis material. The Order Office are, of course, urging us to issue instructions, but before doing so we would like to discuss the matter with you to make certain as to what new features if any you would be prepared to recommend. From our knowledge of theposition we suggest :-

(1). Nitrided crankshafts having flat faces on the webs for the balance weights instead of the jaw type method of location.

(2). Matrix for radiator. We do not think that you will want to move from the present position viz.
Continental type cars - Marston type.
Normal type of chassis - Honeycomb tubes.
as obviously no experience has yet been gained in service with the Marston type, and we thought your policy of putting it on the Continentals was to obtain experience before committing yourself fully.

(3). Strengthened up central main bearing to resist possible higher speeds, with stronger [text struck through] main bearing caps.
[Handwritten]: Crank Case mod. Not yet run

(4). Crankshaft lubrication. Would you recommend three holes in each of the journals of the crankshaft instead of one as at present.
[Handwritten]: Not sufficient experience

(5). Rear Silencer Shield - this to be made in asbestos coated steel.

(6). Electrical Section.
Has voltage control reached a sufficient stage of reliability in your experience as to be suitable for standardisation for this further series.

The above points are items which come readily in
