| From Exp. Dept. Copies sent to: Mr Johnson Mr Royce Mr Spinney Mr Nadin Final report on Exp. 23 Front Axle Bumping Tests. The same arrangement was used as for the rear axles. The steering wheel was held firm. We measured the deflections at the following parts :- 1. Steering pivots torsionally by means of rods fixed to top and bottom. Measurements were taken at 13" radius from the pivot pin. 2. Side steering rod. 3. Track. 4. Pendulum lever 5. Steering column. The first part to take a permanent set was the pendulum lever torsionally, then the off side pivot torsionally, then the near side pivot in the same way, after that the top plate of the front spring began to unroll at the end. The first part to break was the top plate of the near side front spring, it had unrolled before it broke, the next part was the bolt which holds the leaves together on the near side front spring. The new front spring which we fitted began to unroll at the end at the first bump, it seemed to go so far then stick it, the off side one unrolled quite a lot but did not break. The pivots were the latest type but they soon took a set torsionally. I believe the old pivot bending | ||
