16th. September. 1941.

Mr. W.A. Robotham,
Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd.,
DERBY.

Dear Mr. Robotham,

I wish to express on behalf of Mr. Dickson and myself our appreciation of the hospitality and courtesy which you extended to us last Friday. I am also taking this opportunity of putting on record what we then agreed in regard to future action on this problem of squealing of tyres on corners.

We have examined our test wheel here, and are satisfied that it will be possible to fit thereto an arrangement for applying a slip angle to a tyre while it is running on the wheel. As you suggested, we shall use this arrangement to study the factors affecting squeal, and we hope thereby to eliminate some of the variables that are inherent to road testing.

Meanwhile, we should be grateful if you could find time to try on one of your cars some of the following which we sent you last Wednesday.

4 - 6.50/16 Avon Special Speed Tyres. (These tyres will be recognised by the five-bar centre traction pattern. [Handwritten]: 2ND Test

4 - 6.50/16 Avon Standard Silent Tyres with 1" radii at tread edges. Serial Nos. LH.{Mr Haworth}3530, LH.{Mr Haworth}5022, LH.{Mr Haworth}5070, LH.{Mr Haworth}5081. [Handwritten]: 3RD Test

4 - 6.50/16 Avon Standard Silent Tyres, with special tread compound. Serial Nos. LH.{Mr Haworth}4656, LH.{Mr Haworth}4603, LH.{Mr Haworth}4654, LH.{Mr Haworth}3538. [Handwritten]: 4th Test

We also suggest that it would be desirable to test at the same time, two of the present Standard Silent Tyres which could be selected from the following.

4 - 6.50/16 Avon Standard Silent Covers. Serial Nos. LC.7466, LD.1978, LD.1979, LC.7404. (These were despatched to you on the 23rd. July. 1941) [Handwritten]: 1st Test
