Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}7/R.{Sir Henry Royce} 22nd October, 1937. Messrs. Lendrum & Hartman Ltd., Buick House, Albemarle Street, W.1. Dear Sirs, We have received the following cable from Mr. Chayne, Chief Engineer of the Buick Co. in reply to a letter of ours addressed to Mr. Hunt, copy of which we attach:- "SPECIAL TRANSMISSION ONLY AVAILABLE ON "SERIES FORTY STOP GLAD TO FURNISH YOU ONE "IF YOU WISH TO CHANGE YOUR ORDER ADVISE "BY RETURN CABLE - BUICK C.A. CHAYNE." As we are particularly anxious to get hold of a new type gearbox, it would appear that we ought to change our order to a Series 40. Before we do this we should like to be assured that the Series 40 is fitted with the 1938 modification, consisting of a piston with the unsymmetrical crown, which permits them to use a high compression ratio. If, therefore, the Series 40 Buick engine is of the same type as the 320 cubic inch, we should be glad if you would modify our order accordingly, Yours faithfully, For ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. X We believe we are correct in saying that the series 40 engine is exactly the same as the 320 cubic engine. | ||
