Re:- ACTION OF BENZOL ON COPPER. Some time ago I understood that you were carrying out at "W". experiments on various qualities of Benzol with reference to the above. It may interest you to note that I saw a car on Wednesday, in which Benzol had been used and where there were particles and large particles of copper in the jets. The following are extracts from my report, and whether the Benzol is to blame I cannot say. I should have expected Carrless & Capel to sell a.good Benzol:- SECTION 6. Running of engine. It must have been the running of the engine some weeks ago which gave rise to Miss Ezra's enquiry as to the condition. The driver suffered from popping of the carburetter, detonation, and general jerkiness. He had found out for himself that the filter in his petrol tank was in a bad state, the bottom gauze having perished, with possibly, particles of gauze it obstructing the flow of petrol. He had renewed this lower gauze and had not had any popping since. I had the whole carburetter dismantled, and, as we suspected, we found traces of obstructions in the jets. The low speed jet, besides particles of the usual fluff, contained at least three lengthy strands of copper from the gauze. The engine ran well slowly, on re-erecting the carburetter, but I was unable to test it for speed and weakness at high speed, because there were two bent fan baldes. I have arranged to call after these are renewed. SECTION 15. Petrol consumption. 11/12 m.p.g. on the road and about 10 in town. Occasionally during the past few months Carrless & Capel's Benzol has been used the proportion of one in six. Pencil Note. Are you testing Carrless and Capel's benzol amongst the others? H.{Arthur M.
